Website Design Trends 2027 and What They Really Mean for Your Small Business

2027 website design trends podcast episode cover image

You’ve probably noticed it already. You click on a website for a coach, a photographer, or a local service provider, and it looks nice, with a clean layout, pretty colors, and everything right where it should be… and then you click on the next one, and it looks almost exactly the same. Something feels a little off, and you can’t quite put your finger on why.

That feeling sits right at the center of the biggest website design trends 2027 is bringing our way. It has never been easier to get a website that looks polished, because AI tools can build one in minutes, and that means looking good isn’t enough to stand out anymore.

So I asked four of my website designer friends what they think small business owners need to know heading into next year, and I shared my own take on Website Design Made Simple. Here’s the short answer…the websites that work best in 2027 will be built on real strategy, they’ll be easy for both people and AI to understand, and they’ll feel unmistakably like the human behind the business.

Below, I’ll walk you through what each of us sees coming and a few simple things you can do right now. If you read my earlier list of essential website updates, you’ll notice some familiar themes, and that’s a good sign, because the fundamentals don’t change, they just get more important.

Trend 1: From Websites That Impress to Websites That Understand

Robyn White of RDW Design Studio works with interior designers and spends a lot of time thinking about the psychology of the luxury client. For years, premium website design meant beautiful imagery, very little copy, lots of white space, and even a little mystery, because saying less was supposed to make a brand feel more exclusive.

Robyn believes that’s changing, because buyers are doing more research before they reach out, and they expect a website to be clear and easy to move through. Her big shift for 2027 is moving from websites that simply impress the client to websites that show a much deeper understanding of the client.

I love this, and I’ve watched this shift happening for a while now. A beautiful website alone used to set you apart, but these days a good-looking site is easy to get. What matters more is what’s behind it, like how your customer journey is set up and whether your words show you understand what your clients are going through. It’s why I always say beautiful design and strategy go hand in hand.

Here’s a simple place to start. Write down the questions your ideal client is quietly asking before they reach out, like “Can I trust this person?” and “Do they get someone like me?” Then pull up your homepage and services page and see if those questions are being answered, because there’s a lot of psychology behind how people decide on a website.

Trend 2: Websites Built for AI Search and Real People

Kerry Aglugub of KMA Web Design pointed out something that’s already happening. People aren’t only searching on Google the way they used to, because they’re also asking ChatGPT and other AI tools who can help them, so your website needs to make it really easy for those tools to understand what you do.

That means being crystal clear about what your business does, who you help, and what makes you different, and answering the questions your customers are actually asking. I always say clear over clever, and that rule matters more than ever now. A thoughtful FAQ page is one of the easiest ways to do this, and if you want to go further on the search side, this conversation about getting Google to love your website is a great listen.

Kerry also said something I couldn’t agree with more. Because AI makes it so easy to create a website and generate content, the human element is going to be more important, not less. Real headshots, photos of your team and your actual work, and testimonials from real clients will carry even more weight, because your website shouldn’t look and sound like it could belong to anybody.

Her advice is to do both, and I think that’s exactly right. Build a website that works well in an AI-driven world, and make sure it still feels unmistakably human when someone lands on it. Adding social proof that builds trust is one of the fastest ways to get there.

I think one of the biggest shifts in web design in twenty twenty-seven is going to be designing websites for this new AI-driven world, while at the same time making sure we don’t lose the human element.

Trend 3: More Personal Website Experiences, Powered by AI

Kim Russo of On Brand Designs believes AI is going to get oversaturated, because so many websites are starting to look alike, and that people will start craving uniqueness and a human touch again. At the same time, she sees AI making websites far more interactive, and she’s already doing it with a chatbot on her own site that talks with potential clients about what they want from their brand before they ever meet.

I’m seeing this with my own clients, too. A few have chatbots on their websites, and I’ve helped others build a price calculator and an AI quiz that helps visitors figure out which service fits them best. Even my own free homepage bot is a small example of how AI can help someone take a first step before they book a call.

So here’s something to think about. Is there one question your potential clients ask you over and over? Could a short quiz, a calculator, or a guided conversation on your website answer it for them? Tools that help convert consultations make the journey feel more personal, and they save you time, too.

I do believe that there is going to be an uprise of people wanting more uniqueness again, and going back to that human touch, and having more of an interaction.

Trend 4: Letting the Real You Take Center Stage

Teresa Schlup of Caffeine Creative said the shift she’s most excited about isn’t really a design shift at all. So much website advice has been about following a formula, like putting certain words in your headline, placing a button in a certain spot, and guiding everyone through a carefully planned funnel, and while those things have value, they aren’t the whole story.

Teresa believes the businesses that stand out in 2027 will be the ones that let us see the actual person behind all of that strategy. As it gets easier for anyone to create something polished and professional, polish alone won’t be enough, because no one else can recreate your perspective, your experience, and the real stories that shaped your business.

This one is so close to my heart, because bringing your personality onto your website is what I’ve been talking about for years. That “you-ness” shows up in your website images, your about page, and the words you choose. A brand photo session is one of the best investments you can make, and so is having a copywriter and designer working together to capture your voice.

What we’re going to see is a lot more real on the pages of our websites, real conversations, real versions of the people behind the businesses, real stories and experiences that help us understand the people behind the business and the website.

Trend 5: Strategy and the Real You Will Set Your Website Apart

When I listened back to all four of my friends, I realized we’re really saying the same thing, and it lines up so closely with what I’m seeing in my own work. AI has changed the way websites get made and the way people find businesses, and heading into 2027, a website that looks good is the starting line, not the finish line. So here are my three biggest predictions for next year.

1. Strategy will be the real difference. Anyone can get a polished website now, but what makes it work is the strategy behind it, like who it’s speaking to, how it guides visitors to the next step, and whether it’s set up so Google and AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude can understand who you are and recommend you. I always say no one does anything unless you tell them to, so every page needs a clear next step, and these best practices for high converting websites make a helpful checklist.

2. The real you will build the trust. That uniqueness, that you-ness, is what’s going to set you apart in 2027. Your real photos, your story, your words, and your testimonials are what make someone land on your website and feel like they already know you, and that emotional connection is something no template or prompt can create for you.

3. Designers will become partners who help get AI-built websites over the finish line. I love using AI tools, and I think it’s wonderful that more business owners can get a website out into the world on their own. But I’m already seeing so many AI-built sites that get close and then need a little help, whether that’s making sure they’re technically sound, that search and security are set up properly behind the scenes, or that they truly sound and feel like the business. It reminds me of years ago, when clients would build their own sites and reach out because they just needed help making them look and work the way they pictured, and a website audit is a great way to find those gaps.

So you don’t need to chase every new feature or panic about AI. Take a fresh look at your website this month and ask whether a stranger could tell what you do, whether your ideal client would feel understood, and whether it actually looks and sounds like you. If any answer is “not quite,” that’s okay, and it’s usually easier to fix than you think.

Meet Jenny

Founder + Creative Director — Boston Web Design

Hi, I’m Jenny, the designer behind JennyB Designs. List-maker by nature, mother by life, and a firm believer that you don’t have to work more hours to build a successful business.

For over 13 years, I’ve been helping business owners create websites that do real work behind the scenes. With the right structure, strategy, and design, a website can support growth, attract the right people, and quietly do the heavy lifting day after day.

Clients often describe working together as calm, organized, and supportive. The focus is always on partnership and clarity, because when the process feels steady, the end result feels even better.

The real win isn’t just hearing “this looks great.” It’s hearing “I finally feel confident sharing my website.”

A website should support your business, not demand more from you.

No pressure. Just a conversation to see if it makes sense to move forward.
