Your website gets traffic. People land on your homepage, maybe click around a bit, and then… they leave.

ToggleMost of them never come back.
This is the reality for most small business websites. You’re getting visitors, but you’re not capturing them. You have no way to continue the conversation after they leave your site.
That’s where a lead magnet comes in.
A lead magnet is a free resource you offer in exchange for someone’s email address. It’s how you turn anonymous visitors into engaged subscribers, and eventually, into clients.
I just created my own lead magnet, a Website Clarity Assessment, and I want to share why I did it, how I built it, and why you should consider creating one too.
Why Lead Magnets Matter
Most website visitors aren’t ready to buy yet
When someone lands on your website for the first time, they’re usually in research mode. They’re not ready to book a call or hire you. They’re just trying to figure out if you might be able to help them.
If your only option is “Book a Call” or “Contact Me,” you’re asking for too much too soon. Most people will leave instead.
A lead magnet gives them a low-pressure way to engage with you. They get value, you get their email, and now you can nurture that relationship over time.
Email is still the most effective marketing channel
Social media is great, but you don’t own your audience there. Algorithms change, platforms shut down, accounts get hacked. And frankly, if you’re anything like me, we’re getting a little bit tired of always being on social.
However, your email list? That’s yours. You own it.
A lead magnet is how you build that list.
It positions you as the expert
When you give away valuable, actionable content for free, you demonstrate your expertise. You show people what it’s like to work with you before they commit to hiring you.
This builds trust. And trust is what converts visitors into clients.
Why I Created a Website Clarity Assessment
I’ve been thinking about creating a lead magnet for a while, but I wanted it to be genuinely useful, not just another PDF checklist that sits in someone’s downloads folder. I had a personality quiz a while back and people really loved it. However, I knew I needed something new.
I kept hearing the same concerns from small business owners:
- “I know something’s wrong with my website, but I don’t know what to fix first.”
- “I’m getting traffic but not conversions.”
- “My website feels fine, but not effective.”
So I created the Website Clarity Assessment.
It’s a quick quiz (under 5 minutes) that evaluates your website across four key areas:
- Messaging clarity
- Homepage structure
- Trust and authority signals
- Conversion readiness
At the end, you get an instant score and a personalized recommendation for your next step. No fluff, just clear direction.
And because it’s a quiz, it’s interactive and engaging. People actually enjoy taking it, which means they’re more likely to complete it and share their email.
How I Built It with Interact
I knew I wanted to create a quiz, but I didn’t want to spend weeks building something custom or dealing with complicated tech.
That’s when I found Interact.
What is Interact?
Interact is a quiz-building platform designed specifically for lead generation. It’s what major brands and small businesses use to create interactive quizzes, assessments, and surveys that actually convert.
Why I chose Interact
1. It’s incredibly easy to use
Yes, I am a website designer, but honestly I didn’t have time to spend making this quiz. Interact’s interface is intuitive and drag-and-drop and I built my quiz in under an hour.
2. It’s designed for conversions
Everything about Interact is built to help you capture emails. The templates, the logic jumps, the result pages—it’s all optimized for lead generation, not just data collection.
3. The integrations work seamlessly
I connected my quiz directly to my email marketing platform (Kit) so that everyone who takes the assessment can automatically get added to my list and receives their results via email if they so choose.
4. It looks professional
The quizzes look polished and on-brand. I was able to customize colors, fonts, and imagery to match my website perfectly. And I got to use the photos from my most recent brand shoot with Lauren Vara.
5. The analytics are helpful
I can see exactly how many people started the quiz, how many completed it, where people dropped off, and what my conversion rate is. This helps me make changes and updates overtime.
How I built my quiz
Here’s the basic process I followed:
Step 1: Planned my questions
I knew I wanted to evaluate four areas of website clarity, so I created 3 questions for each area (12 questions total). Each question had 4 multiple-choice answers.
Step 2: Set up scoring
I assigned point values to each answer (0-3 points) so that the total score would indicate where someone’s website stands.
Step 3: Created outcome pages
Based on the total score, I created three different result pages:
- High score: “Your website is strong” (recommends coaching call)
- Medium score: “Your website needs clarity” (recommends audit)
- Low score: “Your website needs a refresh” (recommends discovery call)
Each outcome page includes a clear next step and a link to book the appropriate service.
Step 4: Set up email integration
I connected Interact to Kit so that everyone who enters their email gets:
- Their results immediately
- Added to a segmented email sequence based on their score
- Added to my weekly newsletter list
Step 5: Designed and branded
I customized the quiz with my brand colors so it feels like a seamless part of my website.
Should You Create a Quiz for Your Business?
Not every business needs a quiz, but quizzes work especially well if:
You offer multiple services or packages
A quiz can help people self-select into the right option based on their needs.
People need clarity before they’re ready to buy
If your ideal clients need to understand their own situation better before hiring you, a quiz can provide that clarity while capturing their email.
Your industry is confusing or overwhelming
Quizzes simplify decision-making and help people feel less overwhelmed by giving them a clear next step.
You want to stand out
Most businesses offer PDFs or checklists. A quiz is way more engaging and memorable.
