We want to share something we’ve found extremely helpful in increasing our productivity – time blocking. I set firm deadlines for my web projects to hit launches on time with no delays. And being a mom (who only works while they are in school), it’s important to me to be as productive as possible on a daily basis in order to hit these deadlines.
I could spend 10 hours a day designing a new home page, but that’s probably not the best use of my time. That’s where time blocking comes into play.
I then put all the urgent and important items on to my Google calendar, and I put a time on them. I don’t just put a task such as “Website Home Page” on the to-do list – I also give it a time, such as from 7am-9am. That way I know it can only take me 2 hours. And during that time, I won’t work on anything else except for this task.
I continue through to the not urgent but important tasks, i.e. my Peloton workouts and my time with my kiddos. Then I go through to the urgent but not important task of checking emails. For example, I check emails from 7am-7:30am and then not again until 11am-11:15am.
This way, now I am focusing on one task at a time and I’m not scrambling to get things done. I know what I have to do and when. I am more efficient and feel less burnt out. And this structure and control has actually given me more freedom.
